droppin' like it's hawt

Today's the day!
Get thee to your store or website and pick up this awesome solo venture!
Hard copy or digital, gives your ears a treat!
We have been playing it in the office since it dropped digitally, and it is great!
Yay! Steph! So proud of our little sister!
Oh! The song playing today is the one Steph sang at the benefit Defying Inequality earlier this year in NYC. It's beautifully included on the cd.
Absolutely phenomenal support from this incredible woman!

NYC day 1

Having a great time in NYC so far, of course.
We got here and checked into the hotel by 11 am, so we started off the trip with pretty much a full day to ourselves. We're staying at the Marquis in Times Square (I fully admit I am spoiled) and it a great place to be right in the middle of everything. Love it!
We sat in on the taping of Sirius Radio's Live on Broadway which is taped every Wednesday and features among Broadway stars, Seth Rudetsky whom we listen to daily and follow his hilarious deconstructions of all things Broadway on a regular basis. I hear you calling me a geek. It's okay. I'm good with it.
Then it was off to Zen Palate for the first of many awesome vegetarian meals. Those people know how to serve up a meatless meal. I'm trying to figure out how to kidnap a chef and bring him home for my own personal use. Just look at this Thai Chop Salad.
After picking up the first of many cups of coffee, we started the schlep up 51st to The Daily Show studios to claim our VIP tickets. What an interesting process!
One of my best friends from college scored us tickets that assured us great seats for the taping and a little extra attention. Let me just assure you guys that no person or germ is going to harm Jon Stewart or his staff! We were screened, scanned and Purelled! No joke! They made us use Purell hand sanitizer before we could go in! Hilarious! Jon claims to not be in charge of the germ patrol, and blamed it on the fact that the building is "full of Jews. And we are afraid of everything."
Pretty funny! Also, they are soooo serious about not using cameras or phones during the taping. They asked, pleaded, warned and threatened us to nt take out any cameras or cell phones once in the studio and you know as well as I do that some crazy girl took out a phone, used it, hid it, wouldn't give it up, then argued with the bodyguard until he finally won and took her phone and ID. She pouted the entire taping and we laughed at her.
Our show featured George Stephanopoulos and Dan Rather in a 'fro wig and mutt 'n chops. Classic. Hope you catch it!
After that, off to Zen Palate
for dinner and now we are back in the room taking a break. Going down to say hi to Steph in a few. What a great start to the stay!
*post saying hi to Steph: I just love love love that girl. Genuine, sincere, totally robbed for the Tony noms. Going backstage on Friday.

Go! Now!
The digital album will be available on May 12, hold it in your hands on June 2! Sqweee!
Oh btw, it's Opening Night tonight at the Marquis Theatre for 9 to 5! If you're in NYC, amble on over an pick up a ticket if you can! I'm going next week, but hope to be a voyeur and watch the festivities on EarthCam.

How proud am I of my BFF?
We always joke with Steph that she is like our little sister and how proud we are of her success. The more I think about it, she is just like the little sister I have sans the mental instability, rehab, unending drama, multiple engagements, and two divorces.
Yep just like that.

Bless you, Bootleggers

So it has taken me a few days to gather my thoughts, try to figure out how no to bore all three of you to death as I tell you how wonderful it was to be at the Defying Inequality benefit on Monday night in NYC. So if you get bored, don't give up just take a break, grab a snack, do some jumping jacks and come back because I think there are some really great clips and moments that you may find fun and interesting.
First let's talk about what a big girl I am for going to the city all by myself! What?! I know! Granted, I was only there for a grand total of less than 24 hours, but I navigated myself to eat and the show without getting lost or kidnapped! I say that is to be commended. Thank you to my lovely for perfect walking directions to our favorite eating establishment, Zen Palate, from the hotel. You amaze me with your sense of direction.
I also have to pat myself on the back for not getting treated like a tourist while on the street. I am happy to say that not once did I get asked to take a tour, take free comedy club tickets, buy discounted theatre tickets, or would I buy a CD. People, I looked like I belonged! The key is: dress in black, put your head down and don't make eye contact, cross the road against the cross-walk signs when possible and talk fast (Southern readers: dispense with the niceties. Be polite, but brief) I got a gold star!

Ok, so onto the show. If you are not up to speed on what I'm talking about, now would be a great time to make this jump and watch this clip:

The event was held at the beautiful Gershwin Theatre, currently the home of Wicked, and the sets were used throughout the production to add flair so that was nice. I never get tired of seeing the Time Dragon Clock.

The show opened with Prop 8: The Musical reenacted almost identically to the actual production that spread across the web last year. The poster for this video did a great job of splicing rehearsal right into the actual show footage. Take a look at this hysterical production that sets the stage and tone for the evening:

After a short comedy routine by Judy Gold and Carson Kressly, my BFF Stephanie J. Block came out to perform a beautiful song:

Unfortunately the person filming this didn't get a shot of the jumbo screens to the side showing a slideshow of Stephanie in her brother's actual wedding to his partner, and photos of her wedding recently to Sebastian. At the end during the applause when she points at the screen she proudly exclaimed, "That's my brother!" OK-I was blubbering!

After that the show began a series of musical numbers, speeches, dances and comedy routines that all centered around the theme of marriage equality. Because I am a total geek and I love to know what is happening on Broadway at all times, I was excited and overjoyed when anyone was announced. I found myself saying "wow" a lot as participants were announced. Broadway greats like Carole Shelley, Kerry Butler, Gavin Creel, Capathia Jenkins, Billy Porter, Malcolm Gets, Phyllis Newman, Chris Sieber, Tyne Daly, Marc Shaiman, David Hyde Perce, Jonathan Groff, John Gallagher, Jr., Nathan Lane and the wonderful, eloquent, and proud, Harvey Fierstein. Just to be in the room as Harvey read the letter he wrote to Barack Obama and mailed that very morning, asking him to step forth and be an example for the nation and help end prejudice and hate of all kinds was truly an experience. I just love Harvey and his beautiful mind.

There were also scads of television and movie celebrities on hand to share support and outrage: Jane Fonda, Cyndi Lauper, Allison Janney, Sally Struthers, Rue McClanahan, Mark Indelicato, Lynda Carter and...wait for it...Keith Olbermann who recited a portion of his rant heard round the world from last November:

Other great performances included:
Cast of the revival of "Hair"

Jane Fonda inspiring, cheering and supporting:
Cast of Spring Awakening with a twist on the song Totally Fucked:

Hysterical Seth Rudetsky doing what he does best---deconstructing:

As I mentioned in this week's Wowee Wednesday, Cyndi Lauper was on hand to lend support as only she can do and does quite regularly. One of our greatest allies in the straight world is Cyndi. Enjoy her contribution:

Bebe Neuwirth performs All That Jazz Mad Lib style:

Purple Haze from The Color Purple touring group brought the house down with this boy-friendly rendition of Single Ladies:

I hope you have enjoyed seeing just a taste of the show I was so honored to see. The cause is right. The intention is positive. The hearts are willing. The money is flowing in. This portion of the effort raised $400,000 Monday night. Is that the Bridal March I hear in the not too distant future?

Defying Inequality: The Broadway Concert
A Celebrity Benefit For Equal Rights

This week's feature is a little different in that it is a one-off, benefit that I can only hope will be filmed and produced to DVD for future fundraising efforts. BTW, I am checking to see if there are any steal-of-a-deal flights to La Guardia tomorrow morning. Stay tuned. If my Tweets start blowing up regarding NYC and freezing my tail off all in the name of marriage equality, you'll know I've gone!

On Monday evening, February 23 at 8:00pm, the Broadway community (and beyond) is coming together for one of the most important events of the year - Defying Inequality: The Broadway Concert -- A Celebrity Benefit for Equal Rights, a one-night only concert event at the beautiful Gershwin Theatre. The special star-studded evening will feature performers (including my BFF Stephanie J. Block) from stage & screen - from Saturday Night Live to Spring Awakening - all to benefit Family Equality Council, Empire State Pride Agenda, Equality California, Garden State Equality, and The Vermont Freedom to Marry Task Force. For tickets and information, please contact Ticketmaster at (212) 307-4100 and visit the official site.

edit: leaving Jacksonville this morning on a 7:25 flight. Will be in NYC at 11:15. Tweets to follow!

worth the wait

Our trip to California last September seems years away as I sit here bundled up in my fleece hoodie and flannel PJ's bracing for our "coldfront". (Here in Florida we get excited when the low temp starts with a "2"!)
Between the election and the holidays it's been hard to get any movies made, but my lovely sat down this weekend and cranked out another classic! I hope you enjoy the many scenes of our 10 days on the west coast. We had a spectacular time and made some great memories, then again, I love every day no matter how big or small when my girl is by my side. Enjoy! Don't forget to pause the awesome song playing first!

Broadway Monday

Wicked So much happened before Dorothy dropped in.

Long before that girl from Kansas arrived in Munchkinland, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One - born with emerald green skin - is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two grow to become Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch makes for the most completely satisfying new musical in a long time.

I've been highlighting Broadway features on my blog for close to 40 weeks now and somehow have managed to keep this very special show tucked away, waiting for the day when I had the time to devote and give proper respect. Don't laugh! If you've seen the show you know what I'm talking about!
Let's say you're watching the Wizard of Oz when suddenly the camera shifts a frame just a bit to the left. All of the sudden, you are witness to the other story that was playing out at the same time. This is the story of Wicked. The happenings, events, relationships and turmoils that support the story about the little girl from Kansas we grew up reading and watching. There have been many Elphabas and Glindas, but my heart will always belong to my friend Stephanie J. Block! To me, no one can hold a candle to Steph's Elphie!

Wicked is a musical with songs and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman. The story is based on the best-selling novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. In 2004, Wicked was nominated for 10 Tony Awards and garnered trophies for Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical.

Wicked still runs at the Gershwin Theatre to SRO crowds for eight shows a week. The show recouped it's 14 million dollar investment in the first year, and continues to gross a million dollars weekly. A "Sold Out" sign is affixed to the theatre exterior. The show is currently on tour in many cities in the US and abroad.

Broadway Monday

9 to 5 The Musical It seemed only fitting that my first Broadway Monday feature after returning from California to see a preview of 9 to 5 The Musical, should be, well, 9 to 5 The Musical!

The show is based on the original movie from 1980 starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton which told the story of three female office workers who scheme to pay back their egotistical chauvinistic boss. Dolly has collaborated with Patricia Resnick and produced a musical that is going to knock the socks off New York in March 2009. For now it is in previews which means it could be significantly different by the time it hits the east coast. Now is the time when the kinks get worked out. So far the only kinks have been technical issues, and the cast is already tight! It should be squeaky clean by the end of previews.
I wish I could say that I had some music to accompany the post, but you'll have to follow my lead and rely on playing the video clips over and over to get a fix for the songs. Speaking of the music...it..is..FABULOUS! I simply can't wait for the recording. My BFF, Stephanie J. Block, has what theatre calls the "11 o'clock number" that brings down the house! Clips from "Get Out and Stay Out" start at 2:10.

The show was fabulous, but of course it was just wonderful to see an old friend! 9 to 5 The Musical is currently in previews at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles with plans to open in at the Marquis Theatre in Times Square, April 2009.

Broadway Monday

Funny Girl
"The musical is set in and around New York City just prior to and following World War I. Ziegfeld Follies star Fanny Brice, awaiting the return of husband Nick Arnstein from prison, reflects on their life together, and their story is told as a flashback. Fanny is shown as a stage-struck teen who gets her first job in vaudeville. Her success as both a comedienne, and a singer leads her to meeting the sophisticated Nick Arnstein. They soon become romantically involved and marry. As Fanny becomes a major star with Ziegfield, Nick's business ventures fail and he is arrested for embezzlement. The musical ends where it started: Nick arrives, and he and Fanny decide to separate."
Funny Girl, the true story of Fanny Brice, sounds depressing but in reality this musical was a huge success, spawned a number of hits, and most importantly helped propel a young Barbara Streisand into the stratosphere!
In 1968 the show was forever captured on film as Funny Girl made it to the big screen. A great comparison of the stage production vs. the film, song by song, can be found here. Apparently the only permanent record of the Broadway show is the cast recording.
Today's feature gives me the chance to feature my favorite Fanny Brice, Stephanie J. Block. Enjoy her awesome rendition of Don't Rain On My Parade!

Broadway Monday

The Pirate QueenI have been holding back using a show involving my favorite Broadway star, Stephanie J. Block in a Broadway Monday for fear that I may incur eye-rolls and "of course"es. But, I can no longer ignore and shun one of the most beautiful shows I have seen, and I feel it would be negligent of me continue to hide the beautiful music from Boublil and Schonberg's The Pirate Queen any longer. So here goes!

This spectacular new musical adventure tells of a compelling, inspiring woman: a heroine who led an extraordinary life as a pirate, chieftain, lover and mother in 16th Century Ireland. Her quest to protect her people - and save her one true love - embarks her on a thrilling voyage that climaxes in a heated confrontation with the one woman more powerful than her... her fierce rival Queen Elizabeth I of England.
Celebrating the real-life story of legendary Irish Chieftain Grace O'Malley, The Pirate Queen combines classic storytelling and a sweeping score with the powerful, vibrant traditions of Irish dance and song, to create a new musical event and an epic romance. The Pirate Queen features an original score from the world renowned Tony Award®-winning team of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg, direction by Tony Award-winner Frank Galati and a spectacular cast of 40 led by Stephanie J. Block, Hadley Fraser, Linda Balgord, Marcus Chait, Jeff McCarthy and William Youmans. We were fortunate enough to see two incarnations of this show. We traveled to Chicago to attend a preview during the out of town tryout, and then again in NYC May of 2007. The show changed a good bit between Chicago and New York, but all for the best. The story tightened up and clarifications were added that helped the storyline. I can't say it was the best story I have ever seen brought to the stage, but I will be hard pressed to find another show that is as beautiful in the departments of lighting, costumes and music. The recording still brings chills when I listen to it today.
I can't tell you how great it was to finally have Stephanie's beautiful voice resound through my car and home! The entire talented cast was spectacular and it afforded us the opportunity to be exposed to the wonderful Hadley Fraser and our friend Nick Adams.

NYC March 08

Pull up a chair, kids. This is a long one!

We are on the plane back from an incredible trip to our favorite city, so I figured I would get a jump on blogging.
Although the weather was not very cooperative for our agenda, we had such a great time being back in the city. We both felt instantly comfortable and at ease as we started milling around.
We stayed at the Marriott Marquis this time thanks to reward points we had accumulated over our recent travels. Wow. Want to really spoil yourself for future hotel stays? Check into the Marquis and be fortunate enough to get an upgrade which included a room with a view of Times Square! Whuut?! (In case you were wondering, hotel blackout curtains are good, but they are no match for the bright lights of Times Square!)

This is the fitness center at the hotel. It's a big atrium-like room with rows of treadmills facing out over Times Square. Even I considered working out with that view! The little capsule-like thing to the right is one of 14 elevators that run in the center of the hotel.

After checking in, we immediately headed over to Zen Palate for the first of four meals for the weekend. That place is just awesome! It is incredible what they can do with a vegetarian menu! Not to be obsessed with the food on our trip, buuut here are photos of most of the four meals we ate there! I am happy to report that I tried something different at every meal and have now expanded my knowledge base of the current menu.

Thai Chopped Salad Shredded Heaven
Curry Noodle Soup
Shredded Melody
Zen Burger with Yam Fries

After that we rode the subway uptown and ended up at the Apple Store on the south corner of Central Park and 5th Avenue. That whole setup is just cool!

The glass cube entryway is pictured here.

This is a shot looking up into the cube from the store which is below street level. On our ride back to the hotel I captured proof that a New York subway ride is a calming and relaxing event!
Did I mention in earlier posts that we had 5th row tickets for Wicked? Yeah, so we went back to the room to get dressed for dinner and the show. We made arrangements to meet up with my longtime friend Kay and her partner, Sherry for dinner before the show. We had a great albeit rushed meal since they had tickets for a show too. By the time dinner was over weather conditions had quickly deteriorated and we found ourselves trudging briskly through the streets to the Gershwin. Our plans were to take a cab, but it became apparent that were we lucky enough to actually get a cab, we’d be stuck in traffic and risk missing the 8 o clock curtain. Wet shoes would dry. Watching Steph burst onto the stage as Elphaba would not.

The show was incredible! We have seen Stephanie in this role a number of times in a number of cities, and this time she sounded better than ever! Jen and I cheered wildly from our awesome seats, each quietly thinking that she had seen us from the stage!! She sounded absolutely wonderful and just like the first time I saw her onstage, I was again awash with chill bumps and pride! She does this role such justice. I was so looking forward to telling her all those things at the stage door in a few hours. Little did I know it was not meant to happen.

We waited at the stage door, like every other time, for her to exit. It was cold and wet, and they came out to let us know that she wouldn’t be out due to the conditions. It’s hard to not be disappointed, although we both kind of expected that this could happen. So we decided we’d stop by the next night and hope the weather would hold out. I went back to the room and sent Steph an email saying that we enjoyed the show and hoped to catch up with her the next evening.

Yes, more food...Two Eggs and Cheese on a Roll, Fruit Granola & Yogurt from Cafe Duke, our favorite local food stop for breakfast. This place is like the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld. You better know what you want at the counter and order it correctly or "No soup for you!"
Now, I am going to give a shameless shout out to my iPhone for what I am about to tell you. Because I can get my email on the fly, anywhere I have a signal, including at the lunch table Saturday afternoon, (yes, Zen Palate) I was able to retrieve an email back from Steph apologizing for missing us, and that she saw us the night before in the audience! She said that she has been dodging the flu, and the bad weather made it impossible to come out. She asked us to come to the theatre after the show that night and tell the stage door handler that we were there to see her and we’d be taken care of from there. I guess you can imagine that I was ruined, ruined I say, for the rest of the day! Heinz Ketchup ain't got nothing on our anticipation for that afternoon! We decided to busy ourselves with a show since the weather was fully crappy by this point.

From lunch we opted to pick up last minute tickets to see A Chorus Line instead of The Beebo Brinker Chronicles. The weather was pretty awful by this point and the allure of walking out of the hotel, across the street, into the theatre for A Chorus Line sounded better than schlepping to the subway and walking 7 blocks in the rain to see the other show. Also, our friend Nick is currently in the production and we wanted to say hi to him. Here we are with him last June outside of The Pirate Queen.
The show was great and Nick is just the cutest little chorus boy we know!

After the matinee, we headed back to the room to chill before dinner and the trek to see Steph. For grannies like us, waiting around to go out at 11pm is a feat in itself! Jen opted for people watching from the 33rd floor into Times Square! You'd be surprised at how interesting it is to watch the happenings down below!

So we finally made our way to the theatre to see our green friend.
Surreal doesn’t even begin to explain what happened after we announced ourselves at the stage door as instructed.
We were handed off from the stage door to Eddie who asked us to get in the elevator, press 2 and Kathy would be waiting for us there. Kathy is Steph’s dresser for the show, and as she described it, “Stephanie’s shadow” After exchanging hellos, I looked up to realize that we were backstage at the Gershwin!!! Other actors we recognized were whizzing by and going about their business as Kathy said she was going to give us a little tour of the area while we waited for Steph to “de-green”. We found ourselves smack in the middle of all the props: the bottles of green elixir, Fiyero’s Pedi cab, the Oz head, the stairway at the castle, Glinda’s wand, Elphaba’s suitcase she carries on her arrival at Shiz, (see photo above) and her broom which is such an important prop in "Defying Gravity". We couldn't resist running our fingers across some of these iconic pieces. wow.

Everywhere we looked there was something familiar and yet new. Talk about your senses being overloaded! We stood on all the marks for the show on the stage, stood where the cherry picker comes up for the Defying Gravity show stealer, and the trap door for the final scene. Then Kathy took us a bit farther back to just outside Steph’s dressing room, and stood there talking to us about what we do, but clearly had been told by Stephanie that we were some friends from Florida. Again, whuut?! This woman who minutes before had just brought down a full house was talking about us to her dresser?!
Then the next thing you know, we’re standing in Stephanie’s dressing room hugging and chitty-chatting about everything. It was so nice to see her again and catch up. She let us know that from now on, she would just “whisk” us up to see her via the stage door so we didn’t have to wait outside. Whuuut?!
Here we are in the elevator (note the emerald green curtains!) on the way back down. We opted to not photograph anything while with Stephanie, but couldn't resist taking these shaky shots with our phones to capture our reactions afterwards!

We settled for a photo with the star at the marquis outside. If you need your memory refreshed, check the archives for pics of us with Stephanie in the past. ;)
So we confirmed with Stephanie that we will be coming out to LA in September to see the previews of 9 to5 and then back again to NYC in April of ‘09 for the Broadway run. The whole thing was just wonderful and fun and unexpected. Isn’t that just the best way to have something happen? sigh.
